Note from Melissa:

In September 2008, I went to Uganda with Compassion International. We have worked with Compassion for about 3 years, and I have 2 sponsored children in Uganda. When Compassion told me they were going to Uganda, I was definitely on board to go! The main goal of the trip was to see some different Compassion projects in that country, learn how they run and what sponsoring a child looks like first hand. On top of that, I was going to have the opportunity to meet my two sponsor kids, Mumberere and Janet. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I walked away changed.

We met tons of children in these Compassion projects. We were able to play with them, to eat with them, to plant trees with them and to see how their lives are forever changed because of sponsorship. We went into the villages and saw poverty. We saw too many people living in one room, with dirt floors, no plumbing, no kitchens and usually just one bed and mats on the floor for everyone else to sleep. Many times the families go without food. They don’t have a closet of clothes to pick from and often times no shoes. Rarely is there a father and mother both and usually it’s the grandma or someone else from the village that takes the children in. I had honestly never seen things like that. My eyes were opened, and my heart was broken. And when I met my little sponsored kids and got to hug them and have them thank me for making their lives better. I realized how very little I actually do but how far it goes in their lives. I was very humbled. I am forever changed and grateful for the things that I have been so blessed with in my life. Now I just want to let other people know what they can be doing to help children all over the world. It’s simple and life changing for not only the child you sponsor but for yourself as well.

*Compassion International is the world’s largest Christian child development organization that permanently releases children from poverty. Founded in 1952, Compassion successfully tackles global poverty one child at a time, serving more than 1 million children in 25 of the world’s poorest countries. Recognizing that poverty is more than a lack of money, Compassion works holistically through local churches to address the individual physical, economic, educational and spiritual needs of children—enabling them to thrive, not just survive. Charity Navigator, America’s largest charity evaluator, has awarded Compassion its highest rating—four stars—for seven consecutive years.
